This pivotal project laid the foundation for the development of what is now OR Tambo International Airport. Ngobeng, as part of a consortium, conducted a comprehensive assessment of existing airport infrastructure and operations. We analysed historical and projected passenger and cargo traffic data, evaluating the airport’s role in the national and regional air transport network. Our team assessed the capacity of existing runways, taxiways, and aprons, as well as terminal capacity and passenger flow.
We analysed land-side transportation links and parking facilities, and assessed environmental impacts and noise contours. The project involved developing long-term growth scenarios and their implications for airport development. We prepared conceptual plans for airport expansion, including new runways, terminal buildings, and support facilities. Our team evaluated the economic and financial feasibility of proposed developments and prepared a phased implementation plan for airport development. This master plan likely guided the significant expansion and modernisation of the airport over the following decades, cementing its position as Africa’s busiest and most important air transport hub.
