This landmark project set the stage for the transformation of South Africa’s premier international gateway. Ngobeng conducted comprehensive analyses of air traffic forecasts, considering South Africa’s re-integration into the global economy. We evaluated the airport’s existing infrastructure capacity and identified constraints, developing long-term vision scenarios for the airport’s role in the national and regional air transport network. Our team planned for the integration of new technologies in passenger processing and baggage handling and designed strategies for expanding airside capacity, including new runways and taxiways.
We developed concepts for new terminal facilities to handle increased passenger volumes and planned for improved ground transportation links, including provisions for future rail connections. The project incorporated commercial development strategies to maximise non-aeronautical revenues and addressed environmental concerns, including noise mitigation strategies. Ngobeng developed a phased implementation plan aligning with projected growth and funding availability, engaging with various stakeholders, including airlines, government agencies, and local communities throughout the process. This master plan likely guided the significant expansion and modernisation of the airport over the following decades, including the development of the Central Terminal Building and midfield cargo facilities.
