This fast-tracked project delivered a new international airport for Durban in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Ngobeng, through James Matingi Ngobeni’s role as chairman of the Ilembe Consortium board, managed the overall project delivery. We coordinated between multiple stakeholders, including ACSA, local and national government, and construction partners. Our team oversaw the implementation of the airport master plan, including runway, terminal, and support facility construction, managing the complex logistics of constructing a greenfield airport while maintaining aggressive timelines.
We coordinated the integration of the airport with regional transportation networks and oversaw the implementation of cutting-edge technologies in airport systems and passenger processing. Ngobeng managed environmental mitigation measures, including the relocation of local wildlife, and coordinated the testing and commissioning of all airport systems. We oversaw the transition from the old Durban International Airport to the new facility and managed the airport’s readiness for the influx of visitors for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This project resulted in the successful delivery of a modern, efficient airport that significantly enhanced Durban’s international connectivity and economic prospects.
